Faculty Academy is a multi-institutional, multidisciplinary group of teacher educators/researchers spanning post-doctoral, clinical, and tenure track positions. The group was established and championed by Dr. Cheryl Craig (Texas A & M University) in 2002 with support from the Houston Annenberg Challenge (now known as the A+ Challenge). Although the Faculty Academy is now formally disassociated from these roots, it retains the joint purpose of “promoting teacher/professor learning and breaking down barriers of isolation between schools and universities.”
At its inception, Faculty Academy brought together eight public school teachers and eight university faculty members, meeting at various Houston area schools. When grant funding ended in 2009, university members continued meeting voluntarily, shifting the group’s focus to engagement in collaborative research and learning.
Faculty Academy’s unstated mission is to promote a reflective collaboration for its members, which currently includes faculty members, researchers, and graduate students. Practical and professional support for joint and individual research agendas have resulted in Faculty Academy’s Collaborative research projects which include two edited book chapters and multiple research presentations (see Faculty Academy Collaborative Research), giving leadership and research opportunities to its members.
With a fluctuating and voluntary member list (see member list), there are currently twenty-eight members of Faculty Academy, representing over ten institutions in at least four states. We meet once a month and consider our group an ‘invisible college’ (Faculty Academy, 2024), a place where we can honestly and openly engage deeply in our research, revise and connect our thinking, and grow as educators and collaborators (Faculty Academy, 2023).
